For Italian-born writer Helen Barolini, who emigrated to the US in the late 19th century, telling the traumatic experience of emigration of three women is not just a process of recounting the facts but also of reporting the double register of historical objectivity and of the moral and psychological consequences inherent in assimilating to often difficult and painful foreign contexts.
