Keywords:
The Masks of Self: Transcultural Identity in Italian-Canadian Poetry
Genni Gunn’s parable of the faceless woman is an apt metaphor for the migrant subject, for whom the experience of coming to terms with the masks of self is particularly painful and traumatic. Indeed, displacement from one’s homeland entails a loss of identity, which results from the loss, in the new country, of the masks that the I used to wear and which were considered integral parts of her physicality and self in the original context.
