Abstract

Il saggio esamina due opere giovanili di Louis Bromfield, uno degli scrittori più celebri della comunità letteraria statunitense a Parigi nella prima metà del Novecento. Nel saggio “Expatriate—Vintage 1927”, l’autore sostiene che espressioni come “American expatriate” e “young American girl abroad” sono diventate ormai desuete, poiché riflettono un modello superato di internazionalismo. La stessa tesi viene ripresa nel racconto “The Apothecary”, dove Bromfield rimaneggia personaggi e trame appartenenti alla tradizione realista transatlantica per rappresentare come questo internazionalismo oramai superato si intersechi con la paura dell’invecchiamento (al femminile) e l’esaurimento creativo.
