Cezar Petrescu (1892-1961) pubblica nel 1946 il romanzo Carlton, drammatico resoconto degli ultimi giorni di vita dei residenti di un lussuoso edificio del centro di Bucarest che, in una notte d’autunno del 1940, viene raso al suolo da un catastrofico sisma. L’opera, che appartiene al ciclo di romanzi La capitale che uccide, ha per tema il tragico destino dei personaggi, che nella visione dell’autore rappresentano l’umanità intera, la cui esistenza è in balia degli imprevedibili giochi del fato. Non una mera registrazione di eventi, ma un autentico romanzo psicologico di uno degli scrittori più fecondi del Novecento letterario romeno.
Snapshot of an Earthquake
Cezar Petrescu (1892-1961) published his novel Carlton in 1946, a dramatic account of the last days of life of the residents of a luxury building in downtown Bucharest, on an autumn night in 1940, which was destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake. The work, that belongs to the cycle The capital that kills, is focused on the tragic destiny of the characters, which in the author's vision represent the whole of humanity, whose existence is at the mercy of an unpredictable fate. Not a mere recording of events, but a real psychological novel of one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century Romanian literature.
