Quattro pasti al giorno. I salesiani nella Terra del Fuoco
Keywords:
Four Meals a Day. Salesians in the Tierra del Fuego
This essay focuses on how the strategy employed by the missionaries to dismantle the original culture of the Indios in all its forms relied mainly on donating food, which was offered generously and for free as a reward to those who gave up their wild lifestyle. This implied changing their way of thinking and of situating their bodies in space and time, as well as using their hands differently. Indeed, the Indios had to learn to eat at pre-established times following the missionaries’ rules rather than the rhythms established by their hunger and to use utensils like forks, spoons, plates and glasses.
